On the Needles

It's been a busy couple of weeks here at Maxies Knitwear. I've been playing around with new patterns designs and ideas - knitting, counting stitches, unwinding and re-knitting until the pattern looks the way I imagined it. It's a lot of fun trying to create new designs, and once I've worked out the detail and ensured the look is 'just right', I'll give you a sneak preview!

But in the meantime, I thought I'd show you just a couple of the projects currently on the needles. One is a scarf and the other is a double-length cowl. The cowl is almost completed and will be listed in our shop soon, but the scarf may take a while longer due to the detail. Feel free to leave a comment letting me know what you think.

Finally catching up ...

I made a promise to myself before we went away last month ... that upon our return I'd be more diligent in posting on this blog. We've been home 2 weeks now, and this is the first opportunity I've had to sit down and write.

Our trip was amazing; it was wonderful to spend time with our most favourite children. We spent 10 days cuddlying, playing, sharing giggles and being climbed over ... amongst other more practical aspects. What a fantastic way to spend our holidays!

Hubby and I also had a chance to relax for a few days in Beijing before coming back - it was fun to walk the streets, shop, relax ... even though it was freezing. The funniest thing of all - I had to purchase a scarf and pair of gloves! Yes; it was so cold; I couldn't get warm so caved-in for the sake of my sanity. Not handmade and gorgeous like Maxies (of course!), but practical and incredibly warm. It's a shame that probably the only time they will get any use is when we are in Beijing, as it doesn't quite get cold enough in Auckland.

Since we've been back, I've spend some time listing a few new items in my shop. Feel free to click on the link to either Etsy or Zibbet to go and see some lovely new winter gear. They would also make great gifts for Christmas, which reminds me ... I hope to be back in a few days with links to gorgeous handmade crafts for you to see. Maybe they will inspire you as you start thinking about the fast approaching gift-giving season. How does that sound?

So maybe I will be able to post more often eh?! I'm off now to start searching for some gorgeous pic's to show you - enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Our News ...

Are there any items you have looked at and thought would be great for Autumn, Fall or Winter? Now would be a great time to double-check, as we are having a Free Shipping sale from now until the 30th September on all items listed in our Zibbet Shop!

The other news is that our shops will be closed from the 1st of October to the 1st November, as my husband and I are off on holiday to visit the children at the Orphanage (see the About Us column). We are really excited to be spending time with the children, and are looking forward to our time away.

Unfortunately we will not have access to the internet while we are away, so will be unable to check any messages or orders from you over that time. But don't worry ... we will be back at the start of November, just in time for you to checkout any new items we have ready for the Holiday Season.

Introducing …Tuckers Trinkets & Treasures

I’m really fond of charity! One of my plans for this site is to regularly feature blogs about people who use their arts and crafts to assist others in need. So with this in mind, I’d like to introduce you to Tuckers Trinkets & Treasures.

Lisa from Tuckers Trinkets & Treasures is now selling Breast Cancer Awareness jewelry. For every piece sold, Lisa will donate $1 to the Susan G Komen Foundation.

It’s fantastic that Lisa assists this worthwhile cause, as she makes the most beautiful jewelry - which you can see for yourself by visiting her shop at http://www.etsy.com/shop/chocolateandcoffee

Introducing ... Scarlet Threads

Let me introduce you to one of my favorite shops - Scarlet Threads.

Scarlet Threads is a compassionate boutique, specializing in gorgeous products designed and produced in rural Asia. The team at Scarlet Threads believes in providing safe and rewarding work to women in their local village, enabling them to provide for their own families.

In addition to paying fair wages and giving each woman an additional 5% of sale proceeds, Scarlet Threads also donates 5% of each sale to a number of development projects that help impoverished families living in their local community.

What gorgeous items can you find in the Scarlet Threads shop? They have girls summer dresses, reversible aprons, shoulder bags … and the great thing is that everything sold provides assistance for families in need. They say it so much better than me … “When you purchase one of our beautiful hand-crafted products, you become part of our story by providing a woman with safe and rewarding work”. Fantastic eh?!

To find out more, make your way over to the Scarlet Threads shop http://www.scarletthreads.org ... I know you'll love them as much as me!

Introducing .... Max

Yes, that's correct ... Max is my tortoiseshell cat, and Maxies Knitwear is named after her! Isn't she gorgeous? I love all the colours on her coat. Fortunately, Max has no interest in anything to do with knitting - not the wool, the knitting bag, completed projects - nothing. Which is pretty amazing when you read the story below.

We discovered a few weeks ago that Max can tell the difference between acrylic and pure wool. This winter has been pretty cold, and she is getting a little older (she's 12 now). Whenever Max was near one of our jumpers, she'd immediately climb onto it and make herself at home. And not just any jumper, just the lovely, soft warm, wool jumpers. At times we'd be sitting on the sofa watching a movie and find these big, cat eyes staring at us - well, actually staring at what we were wearing.

Then my husband came up with a brilliant solution to this problem ... he went to the Op Shop and found Max her very own pure wool jumper. And yes; as soon as it arrived home she fell in love with it. So our lovely warm, soft woollen jumpers have been saved, and Max has her own one to snuggle up on. Even now as I write this, she's fast asleep on it - in fact I was wanting to take a photo for you but Max is totally ignoring me and I can't get a decent shot!

She is gorgeous eh?!

Sunday, July 11, 2010

We have just had the most beautiful couple of winter days ... sunshine, clear skies, and no wind. Such a change from rain! The only thing is the coldest nights for a long time, and we woke up this morning to a frost. Great weather for knitting :-)

Latest Creation

I must admit I love the look of Cable! It's also a lot of fun to knit. This idea came from a pattern I found in my book - originally a babies jumper. So, I modified it and made this neckwarmer.
